A brief history of Prysmian Group
Prysmian Group has a long history of being at the forefront of electrical construction and infrastructure and has always striven to meet and exceed the evolving needs of customers. With an increased global presence in over 50 countries and 25 Research & Development centres, we now have the widest product and brand portfolio and the most innovative technologies.
Prysmian was formally known as Pirelli Cable, a company well-known across the industry, which was founded in Italy in 1879. Over the last 20 years, we have expanded and developed to become Prysmian Group, thanks to the merging of Prysmian, Draka and General Cable. This agglomeration has brought a comprehensive suite of materials, products and processes together, allowing Prysmian Group to become the top cable manufacturer in the world.
We now have the knowledge and insight to shape the industry with innovations that will deliver on future energy and communication.
Our UK headquarters is very much at the centre of these innovations, playing an integral part in many large-scale transmission projects such as the 400kV cable system and tunnel network, which helped power the London 2012 Olympic Games – and now continues to power the city. More recent projects include the design, manufacture and installation of the 600kV submarine interconnector between Scotland and England. This proved to be a record breaking HDVC project, which involved the use of our fleet of installation ships.
Finally, our Bishopstoke site, which opened in 1967, is now the headquarters for the UK operation. This 46-acre manufacturing site is the nearest to the first ever Prysmian UK factory in Southampton and is now the home of FP cable, and the world-renowned fire testing laboratory.
