Embodied Carbon
Embodied Carbon
What is EMBODIED CARBON?
Embodied carbon in general, quantifies the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the construction, lifetime and demolition of a building or infrastructure project, including all its materials. This amount can be used further to determine the total Carbon Footprint of the building and account for all CO₂ and other greenhouse gas emissions associated throughout its lifetime.
The quantity itself is “embodied carbon dioxide equivalent” or “global warming potential” measured in kilograms of carbon dioxide.
Embodied carbon for cable quantifies the greenhouse gas emissions associated with manufacture of the cable right up to the factory gate. This includes excavation, transportation and processing of all the constituents such as copper, steel and XLPE, the manufacturing processes such as insulation and armouring and then final testing and packaging of the cable. It does not include greenhouse gases associated with the operation of the cable during its lifetime; embodied carbon is published by Prysmian Group limited to the manufacture of a cable.
Why do I need EMBODIED CARBON?
Construction clients increasingly require carbon footprint details for the whole lifetime of their new construction. Cables for energy, telecom and data systems feature prominently in buildings and also play a role in its energy efficiency. Engineers determine the building’s carbon footprint, and they need embodied carbon data for all components, including cables, to do this effectively.
What is Prysmian Group solution for EMBODIED CARBON?
Prysmian Group has designed, manufactured and delivered millions of metres of thousands of cable types for over a hundred years. Our expertise covers data, telecom, energy cables and cable systems which are essential components of the buildings in which we work and live. Prysmian Group's integrated systems approach combines our engineering, purchasing and manufacturing functions to determine the embodied carbon dioxide equivalent for each construction cable we produce, for every step of its journey.
Prysmian Group publish carbon dioxide equivalent’ data in "kg eCO₂e" for Prysmian construction cables based upon ECOINVENT data and methodologies, defined as SCOPE 1-3 or ‘cradle to gate’. This allows your engineers to use all Prysmian construction cables and calculate a carbon footprint of your cable networks in a form suitable for the client.
How do I get Prysmian Group embodied carbon dioxide equivalent data?
Prysmian Group embodied carbon dioxide equivalent data is in the process of being available for standard building cables, including all low voltage armoured cables, low smoke zero halogen cables and all fire resistant cables (FP cables). We will publish for each permutation of conductor sizes and core combination for each cable type and produce them on our datasheets, located ONLY on uk-stage.prysmian.com.

When will Prysmian Group embodied carbon dioxide equivalent data be available for my cable?
Throughout 2023 Prysmian Group will release embodied carbon dioxide equivalent data onto general release datasheets but should your project require this for other cables please ‘contact us’ through our website to discuss your requirements and we can get to a solution.
