Connectivity solutions advancing telecommunications
In our latest blog on the changing landscape of telecommunications, Kris Roberts, Global Connectivity Product Development Manager, explores some of Prysmian Group’s products and solutions that are advancing connectivity.
We know that one way to speed up the fibre optic roll-out, is to pack more fibres in the same duct space through the process of densification. Although this enables faster installations of the cables in the ground, there also needs to be a range of high quality, dependable connectivity products and solutions that will aid the speed up and ease of installation at the last mile. This will help get homes and businesses get connected to fibre much faster.
Advancing connectivity with Prysmian Group
Prysmian has an ever-expanding range of connectivity products, and we are constantly innovating and improving our portfolio for network builders across the UK. Prysmian is uniquely placed to offer specialised network solutions to support the nationwide rollout of full fibre, across both urban and rural environments.
Flexibox
Prysmian’s Flexibox is the ultimate connection device for internal and external FTTH applications. Its purpose is to accommodate fibre only connections, power only connections, or both fibre and power. Flexibox is available for the termination of fibre in various combinations including splice only, pre-terminated fibre, and splice and patch versions. It is designed to enable the unit's fast deployment through easy customer installation and connection.
For multiple dwelling units, Flexibox is suitable for use as a basement box. It can accept an external cable for splicing to the individual drop cables, which can be done as a point-to-point solution or using splitters.
The CasaLink Block Terminal (CBT)
The CBT is an easy to install pre-connectorised closure with allowing the termination of the customer drop cable on the outside of the building. It’s IP68 rating suitable for underground and aerial applications.
The closure is supplied with 100m of cable pre-installed into the box terminated on to SC/APC adaptors. This is to reduce installation time. It can be supplied with optical splitters installed, and a drop cable can be used to feed the splitter.
CBT Drop Cables are used to connect the customers to the output ports of the closure. The CBT is available with the option of 4-, 8- or 12-output ports.
The cables are PIA approved, ultra-lightweight, single fibre terminated at one end with an SC/APC adaptor for connection to the CBT unit, the unterminated end is spliced at the customer premises using a CBT External Customer Termination Box Mk1.
Pre-connectorised xMJ Closures
The Pre-connectorised xMJ closure range consists of the CMJ with 12 SC/24 LC adapters and MMJ with 24 SC/48 LC adapters for jointing optical fibre cables. The closures can be supplied with pre-connectorised splitters.
Prysmian successfully trialled this new closure on the roll-out of a rural fibre-optic installation in Scotland. Installed by External Reality, an internet service provider focused on delivering connectivity in rural and remote locations, the pre-connectorised closure was used to speed up the deployment of fibre to individual properties.
The trial involved the installation of over 6km of fibre optic cable to 15 properties in the area south of Forres, between the Atyre Estate and Rafford in northeast Scotland.
Richard Allan, Managing Director of External Reality, said the closure helped make significant time savings on the installation. "By being able to use pre-terminated blown fibre we're saving between 45 minutes to an hour installation time per property.”
